Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute
The Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) is a centre of expertise encompassing agriculture, food production, animal and plant health, marine and freshwater ecosystems and the agri-environment. AFBI provides strategic support to policy makers and natural resource managers both in Northern Ireland and internationally. As a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) AFBI undertakes assigned research work programmes on behalf of the devolved Department of Agriculture and Environment Rural Affairs (DAERA) and delivers a programme of statutory testing, surveillance, emergency response, research and development and scientific advice in relation to the activities listed above. The Agri-Environmental Branch (AEB), the branch of AFBI involved in NEW Harmonica, has a strong track record of conducting research on understanding and mitigating the impacts of agriculture on soil and water quality. AEB provides both technical and scientific support to DAERA and other government departments for the successful delivery of water quality and agricultural policies in Northern Ireland.
